What gave me particular joy is the dance scholarship underpinning this analysis of Bollywood, and also, the thoughtful appreciation of what is really a tremendously powerful art form. And I love the point about tribal identity; I remember arriving in Delhi last year, hearing all the film songs constantly played in my living room, and feeling instantly at home. This is such a smart article. Laurel outdid herself with the sumptuous costuming. My favorite costumes were the ones for the Moghul Court Dance, although it's hard to choose a favorite. The rust/ warm brown color palette featured in a couple of the pieces was unusual and beautiful. Laurel surely deserves another award for Excellence in Costume Design! The lighting was extremely well done, too. I was fascinated with the Parsee piece (the candlelight ritual dance) and the authentic reference to Zoroastrianism rather than the misconceptions of Ancient Egyptian dance that I've previously seen represented with candle dances. Knowing Laurel, I can trust that her piece is based on solid research. I loved the humor interwoven throughout the concert, such as the narrator's interaction with her "special stage assistant." I can't believe that this impressive and thoroughly enjoyable concert was pulled together in only 2 months. Bravo! Kudos to Laurel, SRDC, and all the other performers for a fabulous concert!
